Turbocharger

The turbocharger consists of a turbine and compressor connected by a common shaft. This ensures that the turbine is driven by the engine's exhaust fumes - it harnesses a form of energy that would normally go unused and simply be expelled. Incoming air is concentrated in the compressor and its temperature is reduced by the intercooler.

Total consumption (combined): 9.7 ltr/100 km. CO2 emissions combined: 259 g/km.

Further information on the official fuel consumption and on the official specific CO2 emissions of new automobiles can be found in the guidelines on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new automobiles which are available free of charge at all retail outlets and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Helmut-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen, Germany.

This ensures that engine performance is increased while fuel consumption and emissions are reduced. Adjustable guiding valves do a lot to prevent spontaneous engine activity at low torque values and eliminate high power density at high torque values (VNT turbocharger). An electrical adjustment unit changes the setting of the turbine of both turbochargers in the BMW 740d.

In this way, adjustments can be implemented faster than with conventional pneumatic control, something that enhances the automobile's dynamic reaction capacity.
